Advanced Electrical, Smart Meter and Instrumentation Technician

On the job, you will ...

• Work with control circuits, peripheral devices, fuses and breakers  

• Work with different electrical testing meters: multi-meters, amprobe, megger and power quality analyzers 

• Perform maintenance and installation of control circuits and conveyor systems in the automation industry

• Install a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and control conveyor systems of large motor systems

Most Advanced Electrical Smart Meter and Instrumentation Technician Job Corps graduates go to work in facilities with conveyor systems such as manufacturing plants, elevator companies, warehouses and airports. Almost all electrical smart meter and instrumentation technician workers work full time, which may include evenings and weekends. 

The credentials you will earn ...

This is the final level of Advanced Training offered in the Advanced Electrical series. In the Advanced Electrical Smart Meter and Instrumentation Technician training program, you will earn industry-recognized credentials from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), and certifications relating SME (Certified Manufacturing Associate).  

Students should also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program. 

What you’ll need to start training ...

• Have a high school diploma or equivalent (can be earned at all Job Corps centers) 

• Complete Job Corps’ Electrical, Facilities Maintenance, Building Construction Technology, Network Cabling, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) or Plumbing basic training program 

• Meet academic (math and reading) requirements 

• Be at least 18 years old 

• Have a positive attendance and progress record 

• Have a written recommendation from Job Corps center personnel 

• Have a health clearance at current center 

• Have a strong work ethic and determination to succeed 

• Complete an in-person or phone interview
